Out of Shape But Optimistic

Getting started on an exercise routine, even a relatively mild one, can be quite an eye opener.  I have spent the bulk of my waking hours over the past twenty years sitting at a desk or standing at the front of a classroom in a sprawling one story school building.  No stairs to climb, no distances to walk, not much of an aerobic challenge.  So completing my one mile walk in place DVD was a form of torture.  But it will get easier,  It's just a matter of sticking with it long enough to retrain these rebellious muscles.

Yesterday, I did something I haven't done in years: I read a book, cover to cover, in one day.  Granted, it was not anything terribly deep, just Julie Garwood's Fast Track.  The next book on my summer reading list will engage a bit more brain power, it's one of Neil Gaimon's books.

The question of the day: why do doctors persist in maintaining the fiction that they make appointments to see patients?  I had a 10:00 appointment to see the eye surgeon, I was ushered into the inner sanctum at 11:15, had my eyes measured, scanned and photographed by five different machines run by three different technicians, was sent to a second smaller waiting area and finally saw the doctor at 12:30 .  I was released at 1:00.  I am thinking of starting a rebellion that will end in doctors having to respect the value of their patients' time or pay steep fines when they fail to do so.

I will join you in that revolution! It is ridiculous that OUR time doesn't matter!! I also had a time of it, starting to exercise regularly. It does get easier as you progress... Hugs!

I also just started exercising also. I'm 53 and have been a recliner potato for the last 17 years. I decided to take the Jillian Michaels route with her 30 day Shred Beginner DVD since I have over 100 lbs to lose. There is no better feeling than completion is there. I'll keep you in my thoughts. Don't give up exercising. You're worth it. Sandy

When a doctor is consistently late in seeing me, first I complain and then if nothing improves, I change doctors and explain why. I rarely wait more than 20 minutes at any of my doctors' offices because of this. My time is valuable too. I am 55 and I walk around my neighborhood most mornings for around 25 minutes. This is usually 1 1/2 miles. It is much more enjoyable than walking in front of a DVD. I also work with 5 and 8 pound weights while watching TV. It is not a lot, but it makes me feel healthier.Good luck on your exercise journey.

Hate the wait. It is just plain rude.
Good for you. I am also trying to get more walking in now that my pain is lowered.

Good luck with your exercise plan. Here in the UK we don't pay for medical treatment and I would never complain about a delay, though it is very frustrating. I always try to be patient and think that maybe they had an emergency come in? But if I was paying I'm sure I would feel differently!

Walking is the only exercise I get. I can do a mile in about 15 minutes but I really notice if I haven't done it for a week.

Cathie must live in a much larger place than I do! We have a choice of only two different surgeries for doctors. They are very strict about staying within catchment areas because of funding and the need to arrange home visits.

There are big signs in our hospital which say "the appointment time is the time we ask you to attend, not the time you will see the doctor". But we are a captive audience. It's not like you can say "OK you kept me waiting, I'm not going to be made better today. Hah!"

I also use the workout video walking in place - Leslie Sansone...I originally thought that 1 mile would kill me - I'm up to 2 miles now. It's pretty hot during the day here so I usually wait to walk outside in the fall, winter and early spring. :-)

I know a lot who are disgruntled with drs and waiting times.

I love the Leslie Sansone DVD's. The only bad thing is that I got off my routine this summer. I had been doing her walks once or twice a day. Your post has motivated me to start it up again!
